Keys to Creating a Personal Budget

If you really want to get a handle on your debt, you have to do more than just pay it off. You also must come up with a plan to keep yourself from spending more money than you have both now and in the future. This is called a personal budget and the experts at York Credit Services say having a budget is essential to managing your finances. Here are the keys to creating a personal budget to help you keep your spending in check.

Know Your Expenses

No matter how much money you’re bringing in every month, you have to know how that income compares to your expenses. Whether you’re paid weekly, every two weeks, or monthly, your expenses can’t exceed your income and knowing exactly where you stand in that regard is the first step toward cutting back on expenses and increasing your savings.

Your Budget Is Unique (Mostly)

There are plenty of budget templates available online, but none of them will have the exact categories that fit your life. However, there are three basic categories that every budget should have, which are “needs,” “wants,” and “savings.” Within those three main categories, you can break up your expenses even further to really pinpoint the unnecessary expenses that you can cut to stay within your budget.

Determine Your Needs

Your needs are the expenses you can’t live without and include housing costs (mortgage or rent), food costs, utilities (water, electricity, gas, phone, Internet, etc.), healthcare, minimum loan payments, and other basic needs. For families, needs might also include school and daycare expenses. While you might be able to trim some expenses from this category (i.e. getting a cheaper phone plan), they are mostly set costs.

Determine Your Wants

This category contains all expenses that are not needs. At first, you might put some of these items in your needs category, but if you’re over-extended on your income-to-expenses ratio, you’ll start to move some of them into the wants category. Wants are items that make life a little more comfortable, but aren’t necessary for survival. For example, you might think furniture is a need, and while you probably need some furniture (like a bed, a table, and a couch), when you really think about it, you don’t actually need much of it at all.

Determine Your Savings

The amount you put in your budget for savings will depend on several factors, the biggest of which is the amount of debt you have. If you have a lot of debt, you won’t be able to save much at first, although you should always have some sort of savings goal to start building your nest egg for emergencies and other unforeseeable expenses.

At first, your savings might go toward making extra payments on your debt, but as you pay your debt down, you can start directing your savings to other places, such as to an emergency or vacation fund. Just be aware that once you start saving, it can be hard to spend it, even on something you really want.

Conclusion

Regardless of how much money you make, it can be easy to exceed your income without a personal budget. Take the time to set one up and commit yourself to following it. You’ll soon wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
